What is a trigger point injection?

A trigger point injection is an injection (shot) into a painful area of muscle. Normal muscles tighten and relax as you use them. A trigger point is a tight knot or band of muscle that forms when a muscle will not relax. They can be very painful. An injection into the trigger point can help it relax and relieve the pain. Trigger point injections are usually accompanied by muscle strengthening and flexibility exercises.

What is the purpose of trigger point injection?

The injection is given to treat muscle pain in a localized area of the body.

What is actually injected? 

The injection usually consists of a local anesthetic and steroids.

How is the injection performed? 

In the TPI procedure, a health care professional inserts a small needle into the patient’s trigger point. With the injection, the trigger point is made inactive and the pain is alleviated. Usually, a brief course of treatment will result in sustained relief. Injections are given in a doctor’s office and usually take just a few minutes. Several sites may be injected in one visit. If a patient has an allergy to a certain drug, a dry-needle technique (involving no medications) can be used.

What should I expect after the injection?

Initially, the pain may be increased until the medication becomes fully effective; this may take up to two weeks.

What are the risks and side effects? 

As with any procedure there are risks, side effects, and possibility of complications. The most common side effect is pain-which is temporary. For other risks please speak with a nurse in the office.
